Not all chemistry labs need to be complex and resource-intensive to be effective. Early on my students did beautiful, quality lab work in an old art classroom with NO supplies! Low maintenance labs can be highly educational and rigorous when students are required to write detailed conclusion paragraphs. The depth of analysis and reflection in the conclusion can transform a simple experiment into a rich learning experience.
For example, a straightforward lab like Collision Theory Glow Sticks can become a rigorous activity when students write detailed conclusions. In this lab students crack glow sticks, put them under specific conditions and make observations regarding reaction rate.
